One disabled client, lived alone after his mother had died and he inherited the tenancy of their home under the rights of succession. The client wanted to take over the utilities account, which was also in his mother’s name. The client however did not share his mother’s surname. The utility Company opened a new account in the client’s name, but it transpired that the deceased mother had overpaid the utilities by almost £250. The client sent a copy of the death certificate to the utility company and they issued a refund cheque bearing the client’s Christian name but the deceased mother’s surname, so the cheque was useless.
We telephoned the utility company on the client’s behalf going through the detail and they agreed to reissue the cheque for £250 using the correct client’s name. He was delighted!
